The Steelman technique is the opposite of a strawman argument. It strengthens an opponent’s argument by restating or improving their position charitably and logically before engaging with it. This ensures fair discussions and reduces misunderstandings. To steelman, understand the argument, reconstruct it charitably if needed, verify with the opponent, and engage with the strongest version.
Steelmanning promotes intellectual honesty, better conversations, and stronger counterarguments. Examples:
Strawman: “People who support universal healthcare just want free stuff without working.”
Steelman: “Supporters believe access to medical care is a fundamental right, benefiting the economy and society.”
By steelmanning, you address the strongest argument, leading to more productive discussions.
